NOTICE OF VACANT DISTRICT 5 BOARD OF EDUCATION SEAT


Opportunity
The Carter County School District is seeking applications to be considered for appointment to the Carter County Board of Education. You are invited to nominate yourself or someone you know who is qualified to serve on the Carter County Board of Education representing those residents of Educational Division #5.


This vacancy was created by the January 17, 2022 resignation of Board of Education member Debra Brown.
Under the provisions of KRS 160.190 (4), this appointment is effective until the November 2022 regular elections. This is a public service position and the person appointed will not be employed by the Carter County Public Schools.

 

Requirements
Board members must be:
*At least 24 years old
*A Kentucky citizen for the last three years.
*A registered voter in District 5, Eagle Hall, Grahn, Pleasant Valley, Olive Hill Courthouse, and Smokey Valley.
*Has completed at least the twelfth grade or has been issued a High School Equivalency Diploma
*Cannot hold any elective federal, state, county, or city office, serve as an officer or employee of a city or county, hold a federal office of “trust or profit” or serve as an appointed officer of a special purpose governmental entity with taxation authority unless specifically authorized by statute.
*Must be in compliance with anti-nepotism laws.
*Cannot provide contract services for the school district.

 

Responsibilities
School board members are involved primarily in the following areas:

  • Developing policy that governs the operation of schools.

  • Providing visionary leadership that establishes long-range plans and programs for the district.

  • Hiring the district superintendent and issuing annual evaluation reports.

  • Setting local tax rates and practicing vigorous stewardship to ensure that all school district funds are spent wisely.
